Nutrition

In some EU countries more than half the adult population is overweight; one child in five is now obese; cardiovascular diseases are responsible for about half the total mortality in Europe and around one-third of these cases are related to poor diet. It is high time for drastic measures!

Even if ultimately, nutrition depends on decisions taken by individual consumers, there are many factors that may encourage or hinder appropriate choices or that influence tastes and eating habits. We are therefore calling for an environment that makes healthy choices easy, but also available, affordable and attractive.

We have seven demands to help make this change possible:

• Nutrition must be explicitly considered in other EU policies.
• Consumers must have good information about what is a healthy diet.
• The nutritional information available on products must be clearer and mandatory.
• Some products must not be promoted as healthy.
• Manufacturers, retailers and caterers must reduce fat, sugar and salt levels in foods.
• Marketing to children of foods high in fat, sugar and salt must be restricted.
• All consumers must have access to healthy, affordable products.

In our campaign we look for restrictions on the promotion and marketing of unhealthy foods to young children, and campaign for clear nutritional labelling. We also encourage industry to reduce the levels of salt, fat and sugar in food products and highlight consumers’ need for positive advice and information on nutrition.

At the moment, the focus of our nutrition campaign is on labelling.
