DECO’s Financial Protection Office supports the increasing number of Portuguese households whose monthly income is insufficient to meet their monthly expenses.

DECO’s Financial Protection Office gets in touch with the creditor entities in order to ask for debt restructuring. The goal is to find a way to enable consumers to meet their financial obligations.

The Portuguese consumer organisation received 29,056 applications for debt assistance in 2015 and 29,530 in 2016. Since 2011, applications have risen consecutively, with 2016 being the year with the highest number of requests.

DECO says that half of the cases (51%) are related to unemployment and salary decreases due to the economic crisis.
