About

 

The Consumers’ Organisation of North Macedonia (COM) is a national organisation, working since 1996 on improving consumer protection legislation and policy, increasing public awareness on consumer rights and interests, representing consumers at the national and international level, providing relevant information and advice to consumers. COM’s central office and national consumer advice bureau is located in Skopje, but also supports the five consumer’s organisations regionally spread with their consumer advice bureaus that are part of COM’s national network providing advice to more than 2,000 consumers annually.

COM is  a member of the Consumer Protection Council of  the Government, and cooperates with the state inspectorates,  the Energy Regulatory Commission, the Ombudsman’s office, the Institute for Accreditation, the Institute for Standardisation and other institutions involved in consumer protection. COM actively follows and support implementation and enforcement of the EU policy at the national level, including requirements for energy efficiency, innovations, renewables, etc.

Success Stories
  • Actively participate in the preparation and adoption of the new Consumer protection Law in November 2022. The new law is aligned with 14 EU Directives and brings significant improvements for consumer protection.

  • Supported creation of the Consumers' Councils on the local level and adaptation of programs for consumer protection.

  • Developed a Certificate (Fair to Consumers) registered as as certificate mark for traders  and certificate ( Fair to Consumers of Financial Services). Both certificates are based on the criteria in 6 areas of consumer protection.

  • Advise more than 2,000 consumers per year, publishes an online informational consumer magazine that influences around 11.000 readers; With up to 7 different kind of publications (brochures, policy papers, guidelines) each year on various topics (consumer rights, energy efficiency, food safety, financial services, public utilities, etc.), COM educates at the national level more than 20,000 consumers per year.
