A review of the 1990 Package Travel Directive was adopted in 2013. Since the 1990s a dramatic increase in internet sales, the advent of online travel agencies, the evolution of consumer expectations and preferences have fundamentally changed the travel market. Many new travel services and products currently offered to consumers fall outside the scope of the existing Directive and leave them unprotected. Moreover, consumers do not distinguish between ‘traditional’ packages and the new products available on the market. BEUC has continuously provided the Commission with input and expertise on this issue, in particular with our public consultation response and the preparation of the Impact Assessment. The proposal needs improvement and BEUC will continue to work towards this end.
