Google Antitrust Investigation
Since 2010 European Commission competition authorities have been investigating if Google Inc. has abused its dominance of online search in Europe. The case is critical given Google’s 90%+ market share in Europe and amid ever increasing e-commerce usage.
EU antitrust authorities identified 4 areas of concern over Google’s business practices and undue diversion of web traffic from competitors. For consumers, the main concern is the prominence of Google’s own specialised services over competing web search services.
BEUC hopes that the European Commission will request sufficient remedial action from Google and that EU antitrust rules help secure fairness in online search within the European Single Market.
