General trade policy / Other trade negotiations
We also keep an eye on the EU’s trade negotiations beyond the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA). Examples are Canada and Japan.
Our work on these negotiations and treaties also allows us to draw lessons for ‘trade policy’ in general. Looking at the situation now, we believe that the EU, its Member States as well as trading partners ought to do more to make trade policy work for consumers. This requires three changes:
- Trade agreements ought to focus back on trade
- Regulatory issues must be addressed outside trade agreements
- Both trade negotiations and regulatory dialogues should be further democratised
