BEUC has welcomed the vote on MEP Bach’s report in the Transport Committee on December 17. It significantly improves the Commission proposal e.g. by including a prohibition of no-show clause (where airlines cancel the return flight if the passenger does not take the outgoing flight); obliging airlines to be insured against insolvency; accommodation rights in extraordinary circumstances; and compensation for long delays.

This follows the European Commission’s proposal to amend the decade old EU law governing the rights of air passengers (Regulation 261) and the update is now being negotiated in the European Parliament and the Council. The Bach report will be published at the end of January and the plenary vote will take place in early February.
