Meat: Inadequate country of origin measure stopped?

Yesterday, the European Parliament passed a resolution on country of origin labelling for fresh meat of pig, poultry, sheep and goat asking for the labelling of country of birth, rearing and slaughter. With this resolution MEPs opposed a European Commission proposal which would have limited origin labelling of fresh meat to the country of rearing and slaughter.

This vote is a positive signal to help restore consumers’ trust in their food. With this vote, MEP’s listened to those 90%1 of consumers who want to have the full picture of where their meat comes from.

The ball is now in the court of the Commission which BEUC hopes will not turn a deaf ear to the European Parliament’s call. BEUC is asking the Commission to reconsider their half-hearted position and propose a law which sheds light on the full origin of the meat on consumers’ plates.
