PRESS STATEMENT - 12.12.2016

In response to Member States’ decision to allow the European Commission to proceed with rules on roaming charges, Monique Goyens, Director General of The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), commented:

“We welcome that EU Member States today took an important step to end roaming fees. These surcharges annoy consumers and have no place in a single market. The rules adopted today are nevertheless complex and their real impact on consumers will only be seen once they are put to use. Consumers should know that these rules do not yet mean roaming fees will disappear entirely but the rules do pave the way towards a real single market. For a single market to develop, an ambitious wholesale market reform is necessary. Now the onus is on the EU institutions to lower wholesale prices as much as possible.”
