WatchOut: Alarming security flaws in smartwatches for children

BEUC NEWS - 17.10.2017

Forbrukerrådet, BEUC’s Norwegian member organisation, has uncovered serious security and privacy flaws in smartwatches for children. Strangers can easily seize control of the watches and use them to track and eavesdrop on children.

Together with a security firm, Mnemonic, Forbrukerrådet tested several smartwatches sold for children. Their findings are alarming. Our Norwegian member organisations discovered significant security flaws, unreliable safety features and a lack of consumer protection.

Forbrukerrådet tested the Gator 2, Tinitell, Viksfjord and Xplora watches. Other models similar to those who were tested are being sold under different names. They have been for sale in – among other countries – Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Italy.
