PRESS STATEMENT - 06.07.2016

Consumers will be better informed about how much energy their appliances consume thanks to a revamped energy label. That is what the European Parliament has voted in Strasbourg today while reviewing the Energy labelling Directive.

Monique Goyens, BEUC’s Director General, commented:

“We are glad the European Parliament has finally given the green light to fix the flaws of the current energy label. It now needs to swiftly start talks with the Council so consumers stop being left in the dark as early as possible.”

“The current energy label does no longer serve consumers. Less than 1 in 4 consumers understand that an A+ fridge is the least energy-efficient on the market. If we want to drive consumers to buy less energy-guzzling washing machines or vacuum cleaners and save more money, it is high time we go back to the unambiguous A-G label. It is a win-win for both consumers’ wallets and the environment.”
