Civil society groups urge EU Parliament to use all its powers to ensure Digital Markets Act enforcement has necessary resources

BEUC NEWS - 28.06.2022

A broad range of civil society organisations, including consumer, digital and human rights groups, have written to the Members of the European Parliament urging them to use all the Parliament’s powers to ensure the Commission has the resources it needs to effectively enforce the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

MEPs are preparing to vote on the final text of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the week of 4 July.

The DMA is a landmark piece of legislation to boost consumer choice and limit harmful practices by Big Tech in digital markets. It sets obligations and prohibitions for Big Tech companies to ensure they do not stifle innovative competitors or use unfair business practices, such as promoting their own services over the services of competitors or requiring the use of their digital payment service for app purchases.

If the Commission lacks the necessary resources and in-house expertise to ensure compliance, big tech companies would be unlikely to take seriously their responsibilities to comply. This would directly affect the effectiveness of the rules and compromise the achievement of their objectives. In this case, the legislation would soon lose credibility in the eyes of Europe’s citizens. Moreover, ineffective enforcement would undermine the respect the EU as a whole has earned for being the first jurisdiction in the world to tackle the excess power of Big Tech.
