BEUC – The European Consumer Organisation is currently looking for two Policy Officers to reinforce its Sustainable Consumption and Production team, working primarily on the implementation of Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and closely related policies that advance sustainable consumption and the circular economy.

The tasks of the positions will include:

The successful candidates will contribute to BEUC’s work, analysis and activities on policies related to sustainable consumption and production and the circular economy. Depending on experience, responsibilities will include:

  • Providing input to support the development of Ecodesign requirements, including sustainability labelling, with the aim of advancing sustainable production and consumption.
  • Contribute to the development of BEUC advocacy and enforcement work on sustainable consumption and the circular economy, with a focus on priority sectors such as textiles and electronics.
  • Supporting and contributing to the development of strategies to advance BEUC’s mission in the area of sustainable consumption and circular economy policies.
  • Representing BEUC, independently or alongside senior colleagues, in relevant stakeholder meetings, such as the Ecodesign Forum and public events.
  • Analysing relevant Ecodesign preparatory studies and draft Regulations.
  • Drafting, coordinating and disseminating policy and technical recommendations, in coordination with BEUC members and external experts.
  • Developing and maintaining contacts with EU policy makers, NGOs, academia, industry and other potential partners.
  • Providing intelligence and assistance to BEUC’s membership on issues related to Ecodesign and sustainable consumption and production policies.
  • Working closely with the Communications team on event organisation and public-facing aspects of campaigns, including press requests and social media activities.
  • Duties may evolve according to the development of the team and its activities.

The main qualifications we are looking for, for both positions, are:

  • A University degree (Master’s level) in Law, EU Law, Politics, or Environmental Sciences. Specialisation enabling a good understanding of EU sustainable consumption and production and/or circular economy policies is an advantage.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in sustainable product policy at EU level and on its key instruments, such as Ecodesign and labelling, gained in a comparable environment (NGO, EU institution, public authority, EU trade association, etc).
  • A technical background or practical experience in sustainable product design and life-cycle-based approaches, including Life Cycle Assessment methodologies, such as the Product Environmental Footprint, would be an asset.
  • Good knowledge of the EU institutions and their political and legislative decision-making processes is a must.
  • A demonstrable ability to communicate complex technical concepts and policy information clearly and effectively to inform decision-making.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English, including drafting, presentation, and public speaking; proficient knowledge of another EU language is an asset.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to rapidly process information and develop expertise, including in new or unfamiliar policy areas.
  • A highly organised, structured, strategic, and autonomous professional, capable of managing multiple projects and delivering results to deadlines.
  • A strong interest in the work of civil society and non-governmental organisations and their role in EU policymaking, and in making consumer products sustainable.
  • A commitment to working in an international, inclusive and diverse team, in alignment with BEUC’s values of openness, ambition, respect, and self-awareness.

What we offer: 

  • A full-time 12-month contract with a competitive salary package (salary, fringe benefits, extra-legal paid leave, flexible working hours) and the potential to be renewed,
  • A monthly gross salary in the indicative range of €3.895 and €4.140 for junior profiles and €4.200–€4.575 for mid-level profiles, depending on experience and seniority,

Location: As our contracts are subject to Belgian law, candidates must be committed to official registration in Belgium and working from our Brussels office. We offer teleworking possibilities from home or abroad, subject to our remote working policy and organisational needs.
