About
Que Choisir Ensemble logo

Founded in 1951, Que Choisir Ensemble is France’s largest consumer organisation, supported by a nationwide network of 130 local associations. Its action is guided by three core principles: independence, expertise and solidarity. Que Choisir Ensemble brings together more than 120,000 members and 4,500 volunteers, supporting a strong local presence to assist consumers on the ground. Each year, our organisation handles around 90,000 consumer complaints.

Widely recognised for our product testing, investigations and public campaigns, around 140 employees based in Paris work on a wide range of consumer-centred services, including editorial activities for print and online publications (notably our monthly magazine Que Choisir and our website quechoisir.org), product testing, policy and advocacy work, legal advice, representative legal actions, and group purchasing initiatives.

Que Choisir Ensemble is a founding member of BEUC and represents French consumers within the Consumer Policy Advisory Group of the European Commission.

Success Stories

Que Choisir Ensemble has initiated a large number of policy and legal actions since the 1970s. Among the most significant successes for consumers are:

•    Following several major food scandals, such as mad cow disease and the undeclared use of horse meat, meat traceability and labelling requirements were significantly strengthened.
•    As a result of a case brought by Que Choisir Ensemble before the French competition authority, the three major mobile phone operators were sanctioned in 2012 for illegal price fixing, with a record fine of 534 million euros, leading to lower prices for consumers’ mobile contracts.
•    After years of advocacy by our organisation, the Nutri-Score was adopted in 2017 by the French government as the official nutritional label, although its use remains voluntary – the fight goes on!
•    Since 2022, borrowers have been able to change their compulsory mortgage credit insurance at any time, potentially saving tens of thousands of euros over the lifetime of a loan.
•    In 2025, unsolicited cold calling (identified by over 90% of consumers as an unwanted nuisance) was banned without exception.
