#ConsumerDebates | How the Digital Services Act can hold online marketplaces to account

Amazon, eBay, Airbnb, Facebook, Google… Online marketplaces have revolutionised consumers’ shopping and booking habits. They have brought benefits but are also causing detriment to consumers and other businesses. Consumer groups, authorities and merchants have uncovered staggering evidence about the sale of illegal goods, unfair commercial practices and fraudulent and scam ads on these platforms.

The Digital Services Act (DSA) is an opportunity to hold online marketplaces to account to make consumers safer and better protected.

This event will – only weeks ahead of the publication of the European Commission’s DSA proposals – touch upon important aspects of the upcoming reform of the e-Commerce Directive such as liability, requirements for marketplaces and enforcement rules.

Speakers include:

  • Neena Bhati, Head of Campaigns, Which?
  • Alex Agius Saliba, MEP
  • Ricardo Castanheira, Permanent Representation of Portugal to the EU
  • Christoph Busch, University of Osnabrück
  • Catherine Van Reeth, Toy Industries of Europe
  • Ursula Pachl, BEUC
