About this publication

On 29 June 2026, EU Member States appointed The European Consumer Organisation's  (BEUC) Director General, Agustín Reyna, as a member of the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

BEUC thanks Member States and EFSA for this opportunity and looks forward to engaging actively in the discussions of the Board.

What will be BEUC's role in EFSA's Management Board?

Alongside the other members, Agustín Reyna's role will involve:

  • Setting EFSA's budget and annual work plans, and making sure they are delivered effectively.
  • Appointing EFSA's Executive Director and leading scientific experts.
  • Keeping EFSA's work focused on its mission of protecting consumers and supporting food safety.
  • Overseeing sound financial management and ensuring accountability.

Why is it important for the consumer movement to be represented in the Management Board of EFSA?

Europe's food safety standards, built up over decades, are among the highest in the world. We need to make sure that remains the case. BEUC is committed to contributing to EFSA's vital mission and to safeguarding its independence and scientific rigour, in support of the One Health approach (1).

Agustín Reyna, Director General of BEUC, commented:

“It is an honour to represent consumers at EFSA's Management Board. Europeans can be proud of the food safety standards that have been developed over the last decades. Moving forward, we need to ensure that this continues to be the case.”

(1)It recognises the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent.

An effective One Health approach requires cooperation and collaboration between relevant sectors and disciplines, such as agriculture, environment, human medicine, veterinary medicine, epidemiology, environmental and social sciences, governance, etc.
