STEP’s role in tackling the crisis in energy prices

In recent weeks the news of rising energy prices has been well documented all across Europe by media and concerned consumers alike. While STEP partners have continued providing energy advice by phone lines, workshops and online trainings, they have also been busy with outreach for the ongoing price hike crisis.

BEUC, the Brussels-based European Consumer Organisation, has been busy advocating its list of recommendations for immediate consumer relief at the political level, which includes a temporary ban on disconnections and reductions of energy taxation at the Member State level, both of which were later proposed in the European Commission’s toolbox to tackle the energy crisis.

Partners have also been re-sharing STEP’s energy efficiency tips, a series of videos which are available in five languages and share key energy saving tips which consumers can make with ease, while BEUC has also been communicating this advice via international media.

SOS, the Slovakian consumer rights organisation, has taken the opportunity to approach national legislators and reinforce STEP’s list of policy recommendations to benefit the energy poor, while the UK STEP partner has been mapping the extent of energy poverty across the United Kingdom.

Kestutis Kupsys of Lithuanian partner ALCO highlighted the importance of long-term legislative improvements, as well as the ongoing short-term efforts. “Immediate relief is important for consumers who are struggling here and now,” commented Mr Kupsys, “but we need to also focus on proper implementation of the Clean Energy Package, the Fit for 55 package, and most immediately, the Resilience and Recovery Funds that should emphasise a just green transition inclusive of the most vulnerable consumers.”
