Consumers welcome Commission action on AliExpress

About this publication

Following the European Commission’s announcement of commitments offered by AliExpress under the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the publication of its preliminary findings that AliExpress may not be doing enough to assess and mitigate risks related to the dissemination of illegal products, Agustín Reyna, Director-General of the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), said:

“We welcome the action the European Commission is taking to ensure online marketplaces play by EU rules. It is now very important that the Commission monitors whether the commitments AliExpress has agreed to are respected and if they are not, the Commission should take more deterrent action. The Commission must also pursue AliExpress in the areas where it is still not complying with the law, such as on its proactive efforts to stop the sale of illegal and dangerous goods on its platform.

“We  found very similar problems with Temu last year  and we expect the Commission to take the necessary measures against all marketplaces that do not respect the law.”
