Today, the European Commission and the national consumer authorities (the ‘CPC Network’) announced the end of their dialogue with TikTok, which had been running for more than a year, and the closure of their investigation into the social media platform. Despite some welcome improvements to TikTok’s policies, some worrying issues remain open or unresolved.

The European court (CJEU) has confirmed consumer groups can file injunctions if a company has violated the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as long as their national law allows it. BEUC welcomes this ruling which is a major development for its German member, vzbv (German Federation of Consumer Organisations), as it will unblock more than twenty GDPR-related cases they have filed which are awaiting this judgement.

A day ahead of what could be the final negotiations between the EU institutions on the Digital Services Act, the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) is urging the negotiators to be bold and not water down important provisions on the table that are necessary to better protect consumers online.
