Introduction

Energy markets

About

The liberalisation of the European Union’s energy markets promised a high degree of competition which would keep energy prices in check and offer consumers sufficient choice and value for their money. Sadly, the energy sectors in many countries are characterised by oligopolistic or even monopolistic structures, where anti-competitive mechanisms are commonplace, often in both the wholesale and retail markets.

Strong actions by legislators and regulators are needed so that consumers can finally reap the benefits of opening up the market such as downward pressure on prices and better services due to competing suppliers.
