Introduction

Food safety

About

While we expect our food to be safe, this is not always the case. It can be clearly demonstrated by a number of incidents over recent years which have had dire consequences on human health.

BEUC campaigns to ensure the EU’s food safety standards are as strict as possible, so that consumers can trust the food they are eating. It is vital that rules on food hygiene are implemented and enforced. To do so, inspections of food producers should be independent and substantial penalties imposed on those who put consumers at risk. The EU’s ‘farm to fork’ approach to ensuring food safety should not be watered down by the use of meat washes and anti-microbials in food producing animals.

Finally, BEUC advocates that food additives must have a clear technological function, not mislead the consumer and be used at safe levels.
