Today, the EU reached an agreement to ensure broader protection for consumers if harmed by defective products. Consumers will finally be able to claim compensation with less difficulty. This update to the almost 40-year-old Product Liability Directive was urgently needed to adapt to the digital world around us.

Consumers are still frequently and perplexingly unable to access audiovisual content, such as films, sports events or TV shows, from another EU country despite geoblocking having been banned as a practice in 2018. This is due to a carve-out for the audiovisual and creative sectors in the original Geoblocking Regulation.

The EU institutions have agreed on the world’s first legislation to specifically regulate artificial intelligence, but the result is underwhelming given the breadth of risks consumers will be improperly protected from in the future.

European legislators have reached an underwhelming deal on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) which will not make it substantially easier for consumers to renovate their homes. The ambition in the European Commission’s original proposal was diluted by conservative governments and groups in the European Parliament.
