The European Parliament’s industry committee today voted on a major overhaul of EU telecom law which lays down rules to protect consumers of communication services, defines how networks shall be shared between companies, and establishes basic principles for national authorities.

Today the definition of what constitutes an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) received a vote of no confidence from members of the European Parliament’s environment committee1. BEUC welcomes that MEPs want to send the Commission back to the drawing board.

The European Commission has today proposed a weak reform of the agencies that supervise financial services at European level. It is bewildering that the proposal still limits the agencies’ role in protecting consumers, which is mostly devolved to national level where protection standards vary enormously. The reform means the agencies will continue to subordinate consumer protection to considerations about the stability of the financial sector.

Consumer organisations in Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland1 have announced that they will collect claims of car owners affected by the Volkswagen emissions scandal to demand compensation in court. Since the scandal broke, The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and its member organisations, national consumer groups, have been working together to hold VW accountable for its fraudulent practices and to compensate consumers.
