Introduction

Cloning and novel food

About

The cloning technique has been pervading the food industry due to its financial advantage and the ability to reproduce the best animals’ DNA. However, although food from clones is currently prohibited in the EU, it is difficult to know if we are consuming food from their offspring. The same lack of transparency applies to food produced using nanotechnology.

Advocating for consumers’ right to know what they eat, BEUC deems full traceability “from farm to fork”, proper risk assessment and labelling as a necessary minimum. Only complete transparency will be able to restore and maintain consumers’ confidence in the food industry.
