BEUC welcomes IAG’s decision to abandon its proposed takeover of Air Europa. This merger could have harmed consumers on air passenger routes within, to and from Spain on both short and long-haul flights.

Today, the European Commission and national consumer protection authorities in the EU (the Consumer Protection Cooperation network) announced they have taken action against Meta’s pay-or-consent policy rolled out as of November 2023 to Facebook and Instagram users. BEUC welcomes that the Commission and the national authorities agreed to follow up on BEUC’s coordinated set of complaints filed against the company.

BEUC, representing the interests of consumers in 31 European countries, regrets the lack of clarity around the remedies that have led to the European Commission conditionally approving Lufthansa’s acquisition of joint control of ITA Airways.

The decision by the European Commission to issue preliminary findings against Meta for potential breach of the EU Digital Markets Act is good news for consumers using Facebook and Instagram who have been presented with unfair choices on the use of their personal data since November last year.
